Gulf Rail Network To Link Yemen

The Peninsula: Yemen will be part of a regional railway network the GCC states plan to have in the near future. The network will be a tremendous boost to the regions developing tourist industries and Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, encourage visitors.
Feasibility reports on the proposed project are likely to be ready between October and December this year, according to the Secretary-General of the GCC.
Three international consultancies are conducting the studies under the supervision of the World Bank and their reports are to be tabled at the next GCC Summit to be held in Muscat, H E Abdul Rahman bin Hamad Al Attiyah said.
Addressing a forum on the Gulf Common Market he said Yemen will be included in the proposed railway project and a special conference on the regional transport industry is slated to be held here on May 19 and 20.
When told about the difficulties being faced by GCC citizens in their free movement within the region, Al Attiyah said four member-countries were allowing GCC nationals with identity (ID) cards in and only Qatar and Saudi Arabia and Kuwait were insisting on the use of passports.
This issue was also being looked into by the GCC General Secretariat for quick resolution, he pointed out.
