The Military Tattoo
For the first time since 1964, Jordan has been invited to take part in this year’s Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is Scotland's biggest, best-selling spectacle, the most popular annual event on the Scottish calendar, attracting an international audience each year of some 217,000 people. This year, 2010, marks the Diamond Jubilee year of The Edinburgh Military Tattoo which is an annual series of military tattoos performed by British Armed Forces, Commonwealth and international military bands and display teams. The event takes place at the Edinburgh Castle throughout August, as part of the wider Edinburgh Festival. The Jordanian contingent includes 130 soldiers and 8 horses. The event will be attended by Jordanian VVIPs and is seen as a demonstration of the very close and special relationship between Jordan and the UK.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Music Fusion
A group of Jordanian musicians including Tareq Al Jundi, Obaidah Madi, Maan Sayeed and Haifa Khalil will play together with the group of Scottish musicians who visited Jordan earlier this year as part of Wild Scotland Festival. The concert, to be held on 19 August, is another demonstration of the close cultural ties between Jordan and the UK. It was organised by The British Embassy in Amman with the support of Jordan Tourism Board.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is widely acknowledged to be the biggest arts festival in the world and takes place every August for three weeks in Scotland’s capital city. Every year thousands of performers take to a multitude of stages all over Edinburgh to present shows for every taste. From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival caters for everyone and includes theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, musicals, operas, music, exhibitions and events.
Interaction for Students
The British Council in Amman has selected 10 Jordanian students to take part in a one- week specially tailored visit to Edinburgh. The students will get the opportunity to meet their peers from the 5 partner schools in Durham. They will also attend the Military Tattoo, participate in the Edinburgh Bookcase and other activities that will be taking place in Edinburgh.
