Jordan Attracts 3m Tourists From January – June 2007The number of tourists visiting Jordan is growing steadily. According to statistics for the first half of 2007, growth was 13.8% higher than last year’s figures. Between January and June this year, Jordan welcomed 3 million people, compared to 2.633 million last year. Revenues from the tourism sector also rose by 20.6%, to 567.8 million Jordanian dinars (over $800 million), in 2006 – 470.8 million Jordanian dinars ($ 665 million). The majority of tourists visiting Jordan (55%) are from Arab countries and the Persian Gulf. This year there were 844 thousand visitors - a 9.4% increase on last year's figures (772 thousand). These are followed by the Europeans - 268 thousand people (in 2006 - 193 thousand). Their share in the total number of tourists is 39%. The number of American visitors increased by 13% this year - from 71 thousand to 81 thousand people. The number of tourists from East Asia and the Pacific rose by 20%, an increase on last year's figures (36 thousand) to 44 thousand people. The number of Russian tourists to Jordan was 21,806. Visitor numbers increased by 115% last year. The tremendous popularity of this destination among visitors from Russia is due a number of factors - a stronger relationship between the countries, regular air traffic and advanced infrastructure, as well as the opportunity to combine sightseeing with beach activities and beauty/health treatments. There is also a tendency for visitors to return to Jordan for rest and treatment at the Dead Sea. Recent surveys have shown that the most popular place of interest in Jordan is Petra. In 2006 a growing number of respondents said that the main goal of their first visit to Jordan was to visit the most famous sights, including the site of Jesus’ baptism by St Peter, whilst repeat visitors cited treatment and rest as their main aims for visiting the Jordanian shore of the Dead Sea.
