Water Music in the House of World Cultures
The House of World Cultures is located right on the Spree River. So its terrace is the ideal venue for "Water Music", the open-air festival that runs July 2 to 26. The program will focus on two main themes: the accordion and the Caribbean. The connecting element is the sea. In addition to the concerts, guest can also enjoy an outdoor cinema program and an art installation.
With Hands Tied - The Unpainted Pictures of Emil Nolde
The Berlin Extension of the Nolde Foundation in the town of Seebüll will be showing an unusual exhibition from June 26, 2009 to January 17, 2010. More than a hundred works will be presented which the artist created during the ban on his painting by the Nazis beginning in 1941: small-format water colors and gouaches that Nolde himself called his "unpainted pictures". Many of the works on display here are being shown in public for the first time.
MuseumsInselFestival at the Lustgarten
This summer, the "MuseumsInselFestival" will present a pleasurable journey through the cultures of the world in front of the Altes Museum (Old Museum). At the different open-air concerts, the sounds of European classics will blend with traditional Japanese music and African storytelling into extraordinary acoustical experiences. Electro-tango from Argentina meets tai chi! Visitors can enjoy broadcasts of organ concerts from the Berlin Cathedral, Indonesian shadow puppet theater, rap from Senegal, or Mongolian throat singers. And the cuisine of the whole world will also be served up in the Lustgarten.
Germany's First Soccer Museum to Open July 4 in Berlin
On July 4, Germany's first soccer museum will open in Berlin. The new exhibition space will present photographs, documents, and memorabilia all centering on the subject of soccer. In addition to the successes of the national team and soccer in the city of Berlin, the contemporary history and economic and political aspects of the popular sport will be presented. The new soccer museum will house a total of around ten thousand pieces, with around five hundred of them on rotating display at any one time.
Six Premiers in One Week: Festival at the Komische Oper
To close out the season, the Komische Oper Berlin will host a festival week. From July 14 to 19, the most important productions of the past season will be presented in one compact festival week, including Mozart's Requiem and Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades. In addition to the performances, attendees may also expect an additional program of culinary and musical events every evening as well as expert lectures before the show and podium discussions afterward.
The First "be-Berlin" Art Shop Opens at the Hackescher Markt
Transparent bags hang on the walls with the most varied of items: a stuffed animal, a wig, or a book. The new "be-Berlin" art shop at the Hackescher Markt is more a gallery than a souvenir shop. It sends its patrons off on a voyage of discovery through the history of Berlin while telling the personal stories of residents of the city. The art shop will present a variety of programs through December with exhibitions, open discussions, and numerous live events. |
