Consumers and tourists could look forward to a metered fare taxi-ride after all these years. A subsidiary company of the Malacca Development Corporation plans to introduce it.
At present, there are no metered taxis operating in the State, as the operators chose to charge their own fare to various destinations.
This left consumers and foreign tourists with little choice of having to pay the fare demanded by taxi operators, although the trip should not have cost that much if a meter was used.
State Culture and Tourism committee chairman, Datuk Wira Amid Nordin said PC City Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of the Malacca Development Corporation, plans to introduce it to 30 taxis by year-end.
Amid said it is proper for Malacca which obtained city status last year to introduce metered taxis, as the State Government would also be launching the Melaka Sentral, its new bus and taxi terminal at Peringgit next month.
