Attractive travel packages and affordable trips are up for grabs at the 17th Matta International Travel Fair (MITF),
which was held last week at the Putra World Trade Centre. The three-day fair has 790 booths with 250 exhibitors including state tourism agencies, hotels, airlines, cruises, tour operators, theme parks and up to 20 national tourism offices from other countries.
Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Abdullah Jonid said the fair was the biggest tourism event to be staged in Malaysia.
"It is a marvellous way for visitors to plan their holidays in advance and travel at great bargain prices," he said at the launch.
"The presence of foreign participants has lent an international flavour to the fair and we are happy that they have shown keen interest in coming here, together with cultural troupes from their respective countries to woo Malaysian visitors," he added.
Abdullah said those who wished to travel locally would also have a wide range of destinations and packages to choose from, as domestic exhibitors accounted for nearly 40 per cent of the fair's participants.
The first day of the fair attracted 6,000 visitors, just two hours after it was opened to the public." "The tourism industry is well on the road to recovery as the tourist arrivals in Malaysia for January this year amounted to 1.4 million, the highest recorded number of visitors in a month over the past decade," he added.
Also present were Matta (Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents) president Tunku Datuk Seri Iskandar Tunku Abdullah and MITF organising chairman Ronald Chan.
Themed "Unleash Your Senses", the fair promises something for everyone, from weekend getaways, honeymoons and business trips to long vacations.
The fair was sponsored by Tourism Malaysia and Abascus. Travel enthusiasts were entertained by cultural performances by both local and foreign troupes.
