ETN: Participants in the Third Tourism Outlook International Conference 2007 held in Malaysia were reminded not to neglect the needs of the disabled and physically handicapped tourists.
"This unique conference is proof we are a 'caring society' which encourages normal economic and social activities for the disabled in our pursuit to be a developed nation," said Professor Ibrahim Shah from Universiti Teknologi MARA, one of Malaysia's top universities for the tourism industry.
Some 50 participants of various disabilities representing organizations from around Malaysia were informed of facilities provided for them.
"In an industry which is facing challenges locally and globally, the tourism industry requires new forms of marketing strategies to build confidence, in addition to ensuring safety and security of travelers," added Ibrahim.
In a departure from the usual mix of delegates, the conference, jointly organized with the University of Queensland, Australia, was attended by delegates from about 15 countries. A special workshop was held to study the access needs for the disabled and elderly tourists by the university's architecture faculty.
.
Participants also witnessed a stirring musical showcase by a group of handicapped and physically challenged performers.
