Kuala Lumpur Makes A Name In the Arts

www.nst.com Kuala Lumpur is getting its act together to be a reputable hub for arts and culture in this part of the world.
Taking the lead from Singapore and Thailand, Malaysia wants to be a player in the arts and culture scene.
“We are giving ourselves three to five years to achieve this,” said Tourism Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Victor Wee.
“But before everything else, the infrastructure and the support system has to be in place first. Malaysia doesn’t have large theatres or halls with fantastic acoustics that can accommodate 10,000 or 30,000 people.” The present halls are deemed too small for such big events.
Wee was speaking at the Press launch of the musical My Fair Lady. It will be staged at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre’s Plenary Hall from May 15 to May 20. The show is co-sponsored by the Ministry and is one of the attractions for Visit Malaysia Year 2007.
The lead role of Eliza Doolittle will be played by Poppy Tierney, one of Britain’s most sought after young musical actresses while Clive Carter, who starred in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical, The Phantom of the Opera, will play Professor Higgins.
