www.middle-east-online.com Anyone who visits Damascus would notices that there is a special tourism interest by the Syrian Government. New hotels, apartment’s complex, tourist agencies have appeared and others are under construction.Special attention is paid by the authorities to archeological historical cites, such as Aleppo’s Castle and Jabber’s Castle on Euphrates in Areca province (160k East Aleppo) in addition to many other sites in Damascus and other provinces and regions. After touring Damascus, and visiting different locations as well as interviewing real states, I became aware that prices of hotels and apartment’s rents have boomed this year in Syria. Most of the people I interviewed agreed that the tourism services received real concern by the Syrian government in recent years. A small hotel manger in Bab Tuma location in the center of Damascus said, “We receive everyday an increased number of foreign tourist groups from Cyprus, Greece and other countries. There is a real demand for renting this year”. “There are notable numbers of Gulf States’ citizens among tourist groups,” he added. In the Abbasia area, in addition to high demands by Iraqi refugees to rent apartments, many tourists also want to rent in the area, and foreign tourists walking in the streets and in the shops has become a common site there.According to the Ministry of Tourisms, there are projects under construction with an overall value of 3.4 billion dollars, while the current value of existing restaurants and hotels amounts to 3.6 billion dollars. The Ministry added that Syria needs to invest 7 billion dollars in new tourism projects in Lattakia, Damascus and Palmyra, stating that the government has set aside land for tourist investments from the Gulf with a value of billion dollars. Gulf tourist investments amount to 55% of overall investments in Syria. Tourist revenue last year amounted to 2.87 billion dollars. The Syrian government is planning to raise this revenue by focusing on the touristm products and diversifying related services. The Syrian government provided facilitations for investors in this field, including granting Arabs the right to own real-estate and the possibility of transferring 100% of profits out of the country. After visiting ‘Castle of Aleppo’, and ‘Jaabar Castle’, I found that there are many Syrians who were interested in domestic tourism. The huge number of Iraqi refuges in Syria (1.5 million approximately), and actual situation in Lebanon as well as Gulf States citizens is an important factor in mobilizing the tourism in Syria.
