Tourism in Tunisia: the only way is up

In an exclusive interview with Islamic Tourism, Moncef Battikh of the Tunisia National Tourist Office in London did not pause for breath as he talked about tourism in Tunisia. أ¢â‚¬إ“We started in the early 1960أ¢â‚¬â„¢s. At that time there were only 40 hotels in the whole country - now there are 850. There was only one airport, now there are six. The French built a golf course in 1929 - now there are 12 golf courses. In the 1960s the country received 200,000 visitors. Last year there were 5.6 million. Seventy-five percent of the tourists come from Europe: 1.1 million from France, 700,000 from Germany, 450,000 from Italy and 300,000 from Britain.أ¢â‚¬آ
Tunisia and Libya have put forward a joint bid to host the World Cup in 2012 and Libya is spending $11 billion upgrading the roads and stadiums. Tunisia was the venue for several award winning films: The English Patient, Star Wars, Gladiator and Indiana Jones.
A new attraction, of which both Silvio Berlusconi and Jacques Chirac have taken advantage is Telaso (seaweed) therapy.
