www.tunisiaonline.com The city of Hammamet hosted an international conference on the conservation of mosaics attended by 290 participants from 26 countries.
The conference was held under the auspices of the National Heritage Institute, the International Committee for the Conservation of Mosaics and the Getty Conservation Institute.
It examined ways of protecting mosaics, as well as the techniques used to restore them. It also identified threatened mosaic sites in the world and the ways to manage such sites.
Tunisia boasts one of the most important collections of mosaics in the world. The Bardo Museum in Tunis , is commonly acknowledged to hold one of the finest roman mosaics collection. Such masterpieces as the portrait of Virgil, or Dionysos's victory celebration over the pirates, being cases in point.
Judging from recent excavations, it is estimated that Tunisia 's soil and coastline are still replete with mosaic treasures waiting to be unearthed. |
