About Shanghai
The People’s Republic of China is the third largest country in the world in terms of area and the largest in terms of population. Its total area is 9.6 million sq km and its population is 1.2 billion.
China has become an important tourism destination in Asia, and the fifth large tourism country in the world. China is fast on its way to becoming a country with developed tourism, and constantly improving tourism facilities and services. It is estimated that, by 2020, China will be the world’s No. 1 tourism destination and the fourth-largest nation of tourists. Currently, China is divided into 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 municipalities directly under the Central Government, and 2 special administrative regions.
Shanghai, China's leading industrial and commercial city and major financial center, is located in the middle of the coast of the Chinese mainland and on the Southern shore of the Yangtze River estuary. The famous Huangpu River flows through Shanghai, which is in the possession of a host of historical scenes and sights that testify to the city's modern-time glory as a national commercial and financial center.
The policy of reform and opening up to the outside world has transformed Shanghai into a sophisticated metropolis with a well-developed network of transport and telecommunication services. It is also the only city in China to have two international airports-Hongqiao Airport and Pudong Airport, which operate direct flights to and from major cities in more than 20 countries and regions. Getting around in the city has become more convenient than ever with the completion of a series of elevated roads, major bridges, and the subway.
Shanghai has a total area of 6,340.5 sq km and a population of 14 million. At present, 60 per cent of all Fortune 500 companies have an office in Shanghai, and 60 with their Asia Pacific headquarter in Shanghai. |
