Hainan Airlines, the fourth largest airline company in China, has announced plans to launch two new routes and join the Oneworld Alliance this year to make up for its shortage in overseas airline networks.
United Airlines, which beat out several other airlines for a new service between the U.S. and China, made its first flight from the Washington area to Beijing.
The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded Elk Grove Township, Ill.-based United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAUA) the right to operate a new route to China from Dulles airport. United won the route over Eagan, Minn.-based Northwest Airlines (Pink Sheets: NWACQ) and Houston-based Continental (NYSE: CAL).
Fort Worth, Texas-based American Airlines (NYSE: AMR), which wanted to fly from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to Beijing, withdrew its application when federal officials tentatively awarded the new service to United in January.
Last fall, a study prepared by regional economist Stephen Fuller of George Mason University found that the new United Airlines route would create 3,400 to 4,100 jobs for the Washington area. |
