Macao: New World Heritage Site

www.magicoftheorient.com Earlier this summer UNESCO added Macao’s eclectic city centre, the product of over 400 years of cultural exchange between the western world and China, to its list of World Heritage designated sites across the globe.
As there are no direct flights from Europe, Macao is generally reached from Hong Kong, 40kms away. Magic of the Orient offers, 5-night stays in Hong Kong allowing time to visit this quirky, lesser-known former European outpost in the east. Departures from London available throughout the year.
Fifty-five minutes across the mouth of the Pearl River by jetfoil from Hong Kong, Macao was similarly a lucrative port. First settled by the Portuguese in 1557 Macao was administered by Lisbon from the mid 16th century until its return to Chinese sovereignty as a Special Administrative Region in 1999.
Historic streets contain both Portuguese and Chinese-style architectural styles, particularly in Macao’s historic centre where eastern and western aesthetic, cultural, and technological influences meet. Elsewhere, Macao also contains fascinating fortifications together with China’s oldest lighthouse. |
