Scotswomen head to Iran

Evening News 27 January, 2004
Scottish artists are heading to Iran to take part in the country’s first international arts workshop.
Roxana Pope and Skye Reynolds, who are based in Edinburgh, and Jane Frere, who works from Inverness, will be taking part in art workshops as well as running courses on theatre, dance, film and design. They have received funding from the Scottish Arts Council and the Iranian Ministry of Culture for the trip.
The women are amazed they have been allowed to openly work alongside local artists.
Iran is still labeled as part of United States President George W Bush’s "axis of evil", with reformist politicians routinely locked up. Many have been banned from running in up-coming elections, making it a volatile time to visit the country.
Many of the Iranian artists are at the core of the reform movement, constantly protesting and demonstrating against the government’s hard-line Islamic policy despite the high risks of beatings and imprisonment.
However, the only rules the Scotswomen have been told to abide by are the obligatory wearing of the Islamic head scarf "hijab" and short coat "roopoosh" in public.
They will also have to avoid physical contact with the male artists during the workshops.
The three women are heading to the country in February and will spend eight days working with local artists. They are hoping the trip could open up a lasting link between artists in Scotland and Iran.
