Zaman 15 May, 2004 The United Nations educational, scientific and cultural organization (UNESCO) has taken issue with the damage to historical texture that the tube tunnel, subway and railway systems may cause.
UNESCO has requested a study from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism of how the historical texture of Istanbul, included in the World Culture Heritage List in 1986, has been damaged.
Istanbul will be discussed at the 'UNESCO World Heritage Committee 28th Term Meeting' to be held on June 28 and July 7, 2004 in Suzhou, China. If the necessary studies are not conducted in Istanbul, currently under 'protection' status on the World Heritage List, the city could be omitted from the list or included on a list of cities with 'heritage under threat'. Four regions inside the historical peninsula in Istanbul are included on the World Heritage List: Suleymaniye, the city walls, Sultanahmet archeological park area, and Zeyrek.
UNESCO stresses that the damage to be caused by the tube tunnel, the deterioration of old Ottoman houses in Zeyrek, and the subway and streetcar systems are negatively affecting archeological remains. Whether there are any improvements on these issues will be discussed at the meeting. A Turkish representative will also attend the meeting. 21 World Heritage Committee countries participate as members and 176 UNESCO countries participate as observers at the 10-day meeting.
Turkey joined UNESCO by signing the 'World Cultural and Natural Heritage Protection Agreement' in 1972. The contract includes the rules decided on by UNESCO that all member countries. In addition to the Historical Peninsula, Capadocia, the Divrigi Ulu Mosque and Pamukkale are also included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. |
