Turkish Tourism Turnaround

Zaman 5 April 2004 Turkey’s tourism sector, sometimes referred to as the ‘industry without chimneys’
because of its vital role in the Turkish economy, gave many people reason to smile during the first three months of 2004. The number of tourists coming to Antalya during the first quarter of this year is up 47 percent when compared to last year’s numbers.
Such a large increase is not totally unexpected considering that at this time last year the pending Iraqi war caused many would-be tourists to reevaluate their plans. Still, when compared to 2002, there is a marked increase of 28 percent. During the January-March period 512,964 tourists came to Turkey via Antalya Airport. Last year, this number was 361,618.
Mediterranean Tourist Hotel Managers Union (ATKOB) Head Osman Ayik acknowledged that this increase in the number of tourists was an expected improvement and that they hoped this number would continue to grow each passing day. “Tourism reaches its peak level in July and August. We hope to keep up with our goal of 6 million tourists coming to Antalya.â€Â
The Travel Agencies Association of Turkey (TURSAB) Executive Committee President Kerim Cavusoglu announced that the progress in tourism was satisfactory. “The normal, routine numbers are the ones we have now. The progress is satisfactory. It seems that we will have a good season. No negative events have been experienced so far. Tourism is a sector that is reacts to every kind of event. As long as it goes on like this, we will keep up with the increase trend that we were experiencing before the Iraq war.
Before the war, we were having an increase of 10-12 sometimes even 15 percent in every passing year,†said Cavusoglu.
