Foreigners Flock to Ottoman Archives
|
|
Zaman 16 February 2004 More than 4,000 foreign scholars visited the Ottoman archives in the last three years.
If we are to keep score, then the Americans took first place among them with 724 scholars. The U.S. scholars are mostly researching the Ottoman bureaucratic structure, foundation system, and social and economic history. Japanese, German, French, Arab, English, Persian and Isreali scholars also made use of the archives. The interest of scholars from Saudi Arabia has also been on the rise in the last few years.
Naturally the scholars are well versed in the Ottoman language. Experts account for this increased interest in things Ottoman by pointing out that the Ottomans had made so many changes over six centuries. "Our archives are rich resources for those who want to obtain information about the Middle East. And the foreigners are aware of that."
Many important steps have been taken to make the archives more user friendly for foreign and local scholars. The Archives General Director Yusuf Sarinay said that they have classified 100 million out of 150 million Ottoman documents. The historical documents have been transferred to computer systems both for protection and easier access. Approximately 2 million documents, as well as catalog information on all the documents in the archive, can be accessed via the internet. The number of the documents in the Republic archives on the other side is currently around 25 million and is increasing day by day.
