www.zaman.com Doğanbey (Myonnesos) is located in İzmir’s Seferhisar district, one of the most important cities of Ionia in antiquity. Founded in approximately 300 B.C., Doğanbey has a 27-kilometer shoreline and 100 different “healing” thermal springs, making it a popular resort.
Mayor Halil Çadır believes the region will serve as the locomotive of thermal tourism in the near future. The village in Doğanbey founded in 1950 by Yörük migrants also attracts tourists to the area.
The oldest historical records of Doğanbey extend to the Hellenistic period. The first settlers in the ancient period lived in Kolophon and Teos. As a result of civil war and revolts, communities escaped from these areas and went to King Attalos of Ephesus seeking refuge. Unable to find safety in Ephesus, the king relocated the people to Myonnesos in 300 B.C. Doğanbey became a strategic location and the center of social activity because it was located near three important coastal cities -- Teos, Klaroros and Ephesus -- during the Myonessos period. Doğanbey was home to the “Asia Olympics,” which were similar to the Olympics held on the Greek peninsula. Its warm climate and thermal springs attracted many people to the city. According to legend, one particular thermal spring cured infertile women. Some of the most popular thermal springs that have survived to recent day are Karakoç, Cumalı and Hamamönü. Since antiquity people have visited the Karakoç thermal springs in hopes of finding cures for various afflictions. These springs are also referred to as Karakose and Karakisse and there are ruins of baths and temples from the Hellenistic period in the area. The Cumalı thermal spring resort also dates back to the same period. The Karakoç thermal baths are located on the old Kavakdere-Ürkmez road 15 meters above sea level. The water contains minerals such as sodium, chloride and bicarbonate. Other thermal spring resorts in Doğanbey include the Uyuz, Ahmetçi and Gelinboğan spas. The Uyuz and Gelinboğan thermal waters are both salty and mildly acidic; the former is thermal water is 55 degrees Celsius and the latter 68 C. The Ahmetçi Hamam has two thermal springs of around 55-57 degrees Centigrade, both rich in iron. The Hamamönü thermal bath is one kilometer from the sea.
