More Than 150,000 Visit Istanbul Exhibit

www.zaman.com A total of 165,000 people have visited the "İstanbul: The City and the Sultan" exhibition in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam since it opened on Dec. 16, 2006, the show's organizers announced.
The event, on display at the Nieuwe Kerk Museum located on Amsterdam's Dam Square.
Among the 300 items showcased in the exhibition were portraits of Ottoman sultans, kaftans, religious relics, carpets, gifts to the Ottoman sultans, scientific and literary works, samples of calligraphy, miniatures depicting numerous important events in Ottoman history and various musical instruments.
Nieuwe Kerk Museum officials said 30 percent of the exhibit's visitors were Turkish-born residents of the Netherlands, adding that it was the first time Turks living in the country have shown this much interest in an exhibition.
More than 30 side events, including the Turkey Now Festival, which ran from January to April in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, accompanied the exhibition, which was visited by a total of 7,000 students as part of their syllabus.
Artifacts showcased in the exhibition were on loan from İstanbul's Topkapı Palace Museum, the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum, the Sadberk Hanım Museum and the Sabancı Museum in addition to a number of Dutch libraries and museums. Its opening on Dec. 14 was accompanied by a ceremony in which Dutch Queen Beatrix, Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Atilla Koç and İstanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş took part. |
