www.todayszaman.com Carpet weaver Ahmet Aksakal of Isparta has woven images of the Battle of Gallipoli into six carpets.
Aksakal, who has made a name for himself in the city because of his skills for transferring images onto carpets, has woven the story of the decisive 1915 battle into six carpets. He indicated that his carpets will be displayed in an exhibit by the اanakkale Governorship.
Aksakal said he was deeply moved by اanakkale after being stationed there for his military service in 1966, in a statement he made to the Anatolia news agency, adding that some of his images included the graves of the fallen, the transfer of weaponry to the battlefield by civilians and a post-war اanakkale. He visited اanakkale twice, taking pictures and speaking to historians to be inspired for the project. Aksakal said that they received the support of Isparta Governor Şemsettin Uzun and mayor Hasan Balaman for the eight-month project that was brought to life by a 16-member team.
The carpets' borders contain images of bullets, canons, rifles and shovels that have been woven into the carpets. "I experienced the excitement of fulfilling an obligation, albeit small, toward our fallen. They have died while we continue to live on this paradise-like land. We must understand the value of this country. With efforts like this we can motivate our youth, influencing them so that they will work harder, and this will grant us more security as a nation."
Aksakal said that the carpets will be in اanakkale on March 13 in an exhibit organized by the اanakkale Governorship. For his next carpet project he plans to weave the story of the Turkish War of Independence.
