UNESCO has included the ancient city of Zeugma in Gaziantep in its project to preserve places
regarded as world heritage sites. Initial studies of sites in Zeugma have commenced.
UNESCO Deputy General Secretary for Culture, Mounir Bouchenaki, Minja Yang of the International Projects Association in cooperation with UNESCO's permanent representative for Turkey, Ambassador Bozkurt Aran, and head of the Cultural Ministry Office, Sermin Ozdurum, were in Zeugma for the past few days to survey the historical city.
In a recent conference attended by a UNESCO committee, and administrative, business, industrial, tourism and cultural representatives of Gaziantep, UNESCO announced that a new era has begun for the ancient city of Zeugma.
Mounir Bouchenaki said that UNESCO wanted to create a project with social significance in the region. Bouchenaki said: "First, the region's historical identity should be determined. Also, this historical region's contribution to the socio-economic development of its inhabitants will be researched. Right now, both UNESCO and the local administrators of Gaziantep have their own duties to perform. We want this unique project to achieve global recognition."
