The Turkish Minister for Culture and Tourism Erkan Mumcu said that his ministry wanted to reach an agreement with private foundations
on the preservation, restoration, and maintenance of historical works.
Institutions that protect works of historical value would be exempted from tax equal to the amount spent on the protection of the historical works.
In a recent press conference, Mumcu gave information about the ministry's annual performance and he said if enough people were interested in the project then "all historical works in Turkey would be fixed within five years". Mumcu added the state's budget would not be sufficient to fix historical monuments and he called on private companies, individuals, as well as communities to place works of historical value under protection. "We will not direct anyone to protect a particular piece. Everyone is free to choose the monuments in need of protection. This is a significant contribution to history. Monuments to be protected do not have to be big and costly. There are thousands of monuments in Turkey that are in need of protection," said the Minister.
He stressed 2004 would be the year to protect historical works in Turkey. Divrigi the Ulu Mosque, the Church of St. Nicholas, the Zeyrek Mosque, and the Topkapi Palace are first in line in the project.
