www.zaman.com The world-famous Zeugma mosaics, long the topic of debates and polemics about their condition and where and how they would be kept, are finally on show in their own museum.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan opened the Zeugma Mosaic Museum in the city Gaziantep, in southeastern Turkish, last week. The Musem's construction has begun in 1991 but it could not be completed for 14 years due to insufficient funds. Opening its doors to foreign and domestic tourists, the museum has created a festival atmosphere in the city. Prime Minister Erdogan said at the opening ceremony that displaying the historical and cultural richness of Turkey would be of benefit to all humanity.
The Minister of Culture and Tourism Atilla Koc, State Minister Kursad Tuzmen and several deputies and citizens attended the ceremony. Koc said the excessive waiting periods for funding of cultural projects should be overcome to revive Turkey's cultural assets. "While 2,402 billion Turkish liras (TL) were allocated for excavations in 2004, this amount has increased to TL 9.5 trillion in 2005. We have been conducting research so as not to leave works of art, which have been unearthed through these excavations, to their own destination." State Minister Tuzmen also repeated that they have opened the second biggest mosaic museum of the world with the excavations of 18 percent of the ancient city of Zeugma.
Gaziantep Mosaic Museum has been reorganized and now has the status of a twin museum. The Mosaic Museum has a total of 3,000 square meters of exhibition area, 550 square meters of which are composed of ground mosaics unearthed from Zeugma. Shown as one of the most splendid mosaic museums of the world, the museum also includes a 120 square meter fresco and ruins, antique mosaics from houses that were buried under the River Euphrates, a famous and unique bronze sculpture of Mars and stone graves. Three different Roman villas unearthed in excavations are also exhibited with their frescos, fountains and columns on view as precious works of art. |
