US Exhibits Rebirth of Iznik Ceramics
|

www.zaman.com The most exquisite samples of Iznik ceramics, which have been reproduced after more than three centuries, are being exhibited at the School of Visual Arts in New York. The artifacts are being exhibited in the US for the first time and include examples of both traditional and modern ceramic art.
Turkey is continuing to represent itself abroad through art. Following the glowing reviews of "Turks: Journey of a Thousand Years," a recent exhibit at the London Royal Academy of Arts, the news that Iznik ceramics are being appreciated in the US was welcome. Exclusive examples of Iznik ceramics that were reproduced with the support of the Iznik Foundation for the first time in over 300 years, will be exhibited at the School of Visual Arts until February 26th in an exhibit called "Iznik, Legendary Ceramics from Turkey: An Art Reborn." More than 50 pieces are on display in the exhibit and includes ceramic samples belonging to the 16th century that were borrowed from the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. The collection includes plates, bowls, glasses and panels. The curator of the exhibition is Peter Hristoff who also happens to teach in the Fine Arts Department at the School of Visual Arts. We remember him from an exhibition called "Three Istanbul People" which opened at Yapi Kredi Culture Center last year. Hristoof is the last generation representative of a Turkish family of artists of Bulgarian origin. He says that his aim in organizing the exhibition is to show the most beautiful and most popular samples of Ottoman Iznik ceramics which are experiencing a renaissance in Turkey right now. He has also a long-term goal which he describes as follows: "Great value is given to originality in Western art tradition. In Eastern and Islamic arts, the value is given to the idea of perfection and repetition of the concept. Every copy takes the artist to inspiration and God. If this exhibition lights a spark to draw visitors' attention, I would like to invite them to come to Turkey and experience being in a room, mosque or mausoleum decorated with Iznik ceramics." |
