uk.franceguide.com From 11th-17th July 2008 the sailors of Brittany welcome sailors from around the world to the lively port of Brest.
Brest 2008 promises to be both dynamic and varied, a maritime meeting place for boats and crews. Nowhere else is it possible to admire such a variety of sailing vessels and fleets, and no other event offers such a huge number of historic boats. Brest exudes the real atmosphere of a working port, full of excitement and capturing rare moments, when the harbour becomes a huge theatre and the visitor can feel like they are part of maritime history.
There will be 2,000 traditional and classic sailing boats, representing 25 nations, as well as 15,000 sailors, 60 coasting vessels, 300 exhibitors, 2,000 coordinators, not to mention loads of musicians and artists.
For one week, Brest will be a port of call for maritime cultures from all over the world including guests of honour (Croatia, Galicia, Madagascar, Norway and Vietnam), and boats ranging from large sailing vessels (up to 117m length overall) to gigs (3 to 5m in length). The two tallest ships in the world will be there: the Russian four-masters, "SEDOV", and "KRUZENSHTERN". The majestic "MIRCEA", Romanian Navy ships, will also be present.
The whole week of the festival will be buzzing with loads of different sailing related entertainment. During the day theme-based tours and activities are on offer: including visits to large sailing vessels and boarding passenger cruisers or historical boats; visiting the yards and painting exhibitions; the Marine Museum; learning how to paddle traditional kayaks; shows and concerts. At night the famous nocturnal parades and fireworks will dazzle onlookers. All this entertainment will be coordinated by Gad Weil, a leading French stage designer, famous for La Méridienne Verte (The Green Meridian) and the centenary aviation celebrations on the Champs Elysées.
A must see at the close of this festival is the start of the Great Brest-Douarnenez race, when everyone sets sail at the same time.
