VisitEngland reports strong 1st q. growth in domestic holidays and attractions
|
|
VisitEngland, the national tourist board, reports that in the first quarter of 2011, the number of domestic overnight trips taken in Great Britain were up 5 per cent, and in England were up 4 per cent compared to 2010. Visits to attractions in England also received a boost with a 7 per cent increase in the same period. The boost in visitor numbers equates to an increase in spend of over £170 million in Great Britain. Holiday travel was the main driver, with an increase of 6% in holiday trips taken in Britain, and 7% more holiday trips than last year taken in England between January and March. The overall growth in the quarter came from increased volumes in January (11% more trips than 2010 in Great Britain, and 13% more in England) and February (15% and 14%). The attractions sector followed the same pattern with January, up by 19 per cent and February, up by 12 per cent, with March falling back by 2 per cent. Outdoor attractions, including farms, wildlife attractions and gardens particularly benefitted from the more favourable weather of 2011. Despite a strong overall start to the year, March suffered in terms of visitor numbers and remained more stable in terms of admissions to attractions. During the month of March there were 8 million domestic tourism trips in Great Britain, an 8 per cent decrease from 8.7 million in March last year. This could in part be due to the Easter Holidays starting later in April this year compared to 2010 when, in some regions, they started in March, and the prospect of a double bank holiday. |
