Peregrine Adventures invites travellers to experience life as a Kyrgyz nomad during a 14-day Central Asian tour from Kashgar in China, traversing the famously snowbound Torugart Pass into the seldom-visited mountain kingdom of Kyrgyzstan, ending in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, departing Kashgar, 18th August 2007.
With its spectacular Tien Shan peaks, Kyrgyzstan is a Central Asian gem still waiting to be discovered. Peregrine’s tour starts across the border in Kashgar, in time to visit the city’s famous Sunday market established over 2,000 years ago - a must on any itinerary. The high road to Kyrgyzstan heads up to the legendary Torugart Pass (3,752 m), the ancient gateway to the kingdom. Staying in simple traditional yurts, travellers live alongside friendly nomadic people, enjoying unrivalled hospitality and witnessing a culture little-changed for centuries. There is a visit to Son-Kul Lake, a beautiful spot where many nomadic herders make their summer camp and Issyk-Kul Lake, so impressively large it never freezes. This is followed by a trek to the spectacular 30km Barskoön Gorge for waterfalls and ancient fortesses. Continue around the north shore of the lake, via Jeti-Öghüz Gorge, to Karakol where the town’s traditional wooden houses are arrayed in a surprisingly European style. Further west, Cholpon-Ata’s sandy beaches and ancient petroglyphs are explored en route to 11th Century Burana Tower, a minaret in the old city of Balasagun. Arriving in the surreal modernity of capital Bishkek, there’s time to sightsee before heading to the nearby Ala-Archa Gorge, part of a national park created in 1976 and occupying some 19,500 square kilometres. Snow-covered peaks and steep spruce-forested slopes characterise an area rich in flora and fauna. Finally, a flight from Bishkek to Uzbek capital Tashkent allows a night to indulge in the surprisingly cosmopolitan selection of restaurants before the tour ends after breakfast next day.
