ETN Saudi Arabia signed a joint statement here allowing the two countries’ citizens to travel by land, sea and air using their respective identity cards.
The decision will take effect from June 6. Col Amir bin Said al Hajri, director-general of Passports and Residency at the ROP, signed on behalf of the Sultanate while Maj Gen Salim bin Mohammed al Blaihed, Saudi Passports director-general, signed on behalf of Saudi Arabia.
The system allows citizens of both the countries to travel by land, sea and air using their ID or passports to enter the other country either from their original country or elsewhere.
This agreement comes as part of the cordial brotherly bilateral relations to facilitate movement between the two peoples.
Meanwhile, Abdurrahman bin Hamad al Attiyah, secretary-general of the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), hailed Oman and Saudi Arabia’s signing of the agreement, saying “the step crowned the brotherly relations between the two countries at all levels.â€Â
The move comes within the context of prime goals of the GCC and reflects the continuous keenness of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and other GCC leaders to reinforce intra-GCC ties, Al Attiyah said.
He added that the signing assumes significance as it complements procedures to facilitate the travel of GCC citizens within member states without having to use passports. This, he explained, will reflect positively on employment, economic and social aspects of GCC states. |
