Saudi Arabia to introduce new tourist visa

Gulf News 22 April, 2004
Saudi Arabia will soon launch a new tourist visa to ease travel restrictions to the kingdom.
This is expected to accelerate the pace of the Gulf's economic integration, according to officials of the Saudi-based Project Management Institute (PMI), which will hold its 10th International conference and exhibition here.
General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Defence Minister, is expected to deliver the keynote address at the event, to be held from May 25-27, on reducing trade barriers to achieve greater economic success in the oil and gas as well as construction sectors in the Gulf.
The event holds special significance as it will focus on forging joint ventures and cross-border cooperation in various projects across the Gulf at a time when the GCC is pushing for greater economic integration.
Following the implementation of the GCC Customs Union last year, it is now moving ahead to launch a common currency by 2010.
"The conference will highlight the possible ways and means to forge greater cooperation among the region's business community, removal of trade barriers as well as address issues related to the project management in the Gulf," said Salem H. Shaheen, president of PMI's Gulf chapter.
"Special emphasis will be given to projects related to the oil and gas as well as construction sectors and suggest ways to reduce barriers across the GCC.
"The Saudi Government is taking a liberal view on removing trade barriers. To ease the movement of business travellers, the government is going to launch a tourism visa which will allow free movement of business travellers in the kingdom. The government's decision could come soon."
Shaheen said the event will also focus on government dominance in projects. "The private sector needs to be given more liberty and government projects need to be privatised.
"Private sector participation in government projects is an important development and we want increased private sector participation in government projects. The conference will highlight these issues which we believe are key to the development of the Gulf economy."
Dubai's development model, he said, has a balance between public and private sector participation.
Sami Abdulghani, chairman of the conference, said: "With the evolution of globalisation and business diversification, we in the Gulf are opening up to the whole world and encouraging foreigners to share in the development and prosperity of the region.
"Local GCC companies, over the last 25 years, managed to develop outstanding technical and financial capabilities within their own countries. Unfortunately, these companies have not been able to do business in the region for many reasons.
"The conference will make recommendations that will help remove all obstacles and barriers in the region and set the stage for a healthier business environment based upon respect, professionalism, common goals and interests."
