It is impossible to mention Central Asia, without conjuring up images of the great 13th-century Venetian merchant, author and explorer, Marco Polo. During his 20 years in Asia, much of Marco Polo’s time was spent in China in service for the Mongolians under the rule of Kublai Khan, the grandson of the legendary Chingis Khan. Marco Polo began his journeys as a trader but soon became much more by traveling further than his predecessors, living within foreign societies and learning about their cultures. His book, entitled “The Travels of Marco Polo,” is perhaps one of the best commentaries about the Mongol Empire and chronicles his incredible journeys throughout Asia.
Inspired by the same spirit of exploration and appreciation of the diverse, colorful cultures in Asia, Nomadic Expeditions have pioneered journeys to lands whose cultures still thrive under the same traditions and lifestyles as described by Marco Polo in his writings. From Kazakhs who continue to hunt with trained Golden Eagles, to Mongolian nomads who have continued to move their tent-like homes with the changing of seasons, to Tibetan monks who chant age-old prayers, the company provides a guide to the discoveries of the most ancient and resplendent cultures in Asia.
Its cultural journeys have been designed to go that extra bit further, much as Marco Polo did, and to uncover the legendary sites and little-known histories of Asia’s cultures and lands. Popular trips include:
