Science 2 January 2004
Ancient tools and weapons found in the Artic suggest humans populated the area in the Ice Age, twice as early as previously thought.
The earliest evidence had been from 15,000 years ago, as ice sheets melted. But now artefacts from around 30,000 years old, including spear shafts made of woolly rhinoceros horn and mammoth tusk have been found in northern Siberia. The shafts are like those found in America suggesting a migration according to Science. The discovery was made on the Yana River, 300 miles above the Arctic circle.
