There are exciting new things to discover at two of the city’s biggest attractions, Schönbrunn Palace and Schönbrunn Zoo.
Schönbrunn Zoo is best known for its exotic animals, but it also provides a habitat for a number of wild species native to Austria. The part of the zoo's grounds that extends into the fringe of the Vienna Woods is populated by various wild animals including squirrels and badgers. A new nature trail at the zoo gives visitors the chance to revel in the beauty of the flora and fauna while allowing the plants and animals to flourish in their natural environment. The nature trail starts at the hill-top Tirolerhof inn. From this vantage point a tree-top trail – reaching dizzying heights of up to ten meters – gives breathtaking views of the zoo, palace and city. A wooded area with anthills and spawning grounds for frogs is next. Amphibians and reptiles including adders, fire salamanders and emerald salamanders bask in outdoor enclosures. The third stage of the nature trail is given over to indigenous fish species in giant aquariums.
Schönbrunn Palace, the imposing summer residence of the Habsburg emperors, recently introduced a special service for deaf and hearing-impaired visitors. The Museum Sign Language Guide is a handheld multimedia guide that gives video tours of the palace in sign language. Each room on the tour has a number which can be entered into the device. This loads the relevant video in which a sign-language interpreter communicates all the necessary information. In addition to Austrian signing, the videos are also available in International Sign. Equipment hire is included in the admission fee. Anyone wishing to take advantage of the service is request to reserve three days ahead of time as the number of devices is limited.
The Palm House in the Schönbrunner Schlosspark has a special highlight for plant lovers in fall 2010. The legendary Maria-Theresa myrtle will be on show for a few weeks from the end of September (dates to be confirmed). This botanical gem was presented to Empress Maria Theresa as a wedding gift by the Osman Sultan in 1736. The 2.5-meter plant is around 300 years old and is rarely shown in public due to its age.
