www.bns.com The Latvian Culture Ministry shut one of the country’s most treasured landmarks and popular tourist attractions, the Dome Cathedral in Riga, after architectural preservationists said it was in danger of collapsing, a spokesman for the Ministry of Culture said. According to preservationists the cathedral, which was built in the 13th century, is unsafe. Culture Minister Helena Demakova ordered it closed until several structural problems can be repaired. This could take as long as eight years. Last year more than 100,000 tourists visited the cathedral. |
