www.all africa.com A third Nairobi-based airline will start flying to Southern Sudan in two weeks to meet the needs of the growing economy.
African Express Airways will operate two flights a week to Juba on Tuesdays and Fridays from October 31. It joins Jetlink, which flies to Juba from Nairobi from Monday to Friday and Delta Connection with four flights a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
African Express Airways is in the venture with local travel agent Charleston Travel.
Charleston Travel executive director Mohammed Wanyoike said the airline was targeting non-governmental organisations operating in Southern Sudan, traders and State officials.
He told the Nation there was no access to Southern Sudan except through Nairobi. "People travelling to Southern Sudan or going to other countries have to come here (Nairobi)," Mr Wanyoike said.
African Express Airways is a Kenyan airline that has been in operation for more than 20 years.
The airline hopes to provide connections to major South Sudanese centres such as Rumbek, Yambio, Yei, Wau and Malakal, said Mr Wanyoike.
He added that the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between southerners and the Sudanese government has paved the way for several construction projects.
"The rate of development in Southern Sudan is very high, which means the market for this route is growing quickly and steadily," Mr Wanyoike added. |
