http://www.viminacium.org.yu/ The archaeological site of Viminacium on the Danube in Serbia is a vivid illustration of the importance of the Roman city and its military encampment.
Viminacium boasted broad streets, monumental temples, luxurious villas, baths, and an amphitheatre. Magnificent frescos, some which adorned even early Christian graves, provide proof to the town's ancient splendour.
Parts of the cemetery, the Porta Praetoria, the outlines of a basilica, as well as the remnants of an aqueduct and a Roman bath have been uncovered. Visitors can tour the site in a horse-drawn chariot, and can refresh themselves after their visit in a Roman tavern. A pier for cruise ships was opened last year on the right bank of the Danube at Kostolac (river kilometre 1095), offering easy access to the excavations.
